surau
1. i was sitting on a bench, one of many which are located along the corridor of my faculty. i'm pretty sleepy. was actually reading a novel which will be finishing soon, but then, i nearly dozed off and decided to on my laptop and put some thoughts onto my blog.
2. surau. a small room allocated by the faculty for muslims to perform their prayers. it's on the ground floor of the old building. went there a couple of times and the experience wasn't something that i would say worth remembering.
3. the air was stale. when entering, we would be greeted not only by the mentioned smell, but also the wet floor as the wudhuk place was right there. to head to the praying area, you'd have to wade through the water puddle. well, i am exaggerating, i know. still, to me, i find it rather messy.
4. the praying area. no air cond, none that was functioning that is. there's a wall-mounted fan and another ceiling fan. due to the lack of air circulation design, there were all sorts of smell that would trespass your nasal senses. i dont know about you, but i dont feel like breathing that kind of air.
5. the praying suit (telekung) that were there for the use of everyone, was not properly hung to dry after being used. therefore there would be a terrible stench coming from it. and i wonder when was it last washed. and who took the trouble to wash it? if only i could help make it better.
6. if only there could be changes. for the better. for all muslims in the faculty. that would be so much better. performing one's prayers in sheer comfort and clean environment.
7. suggestion.
a. allocate bigger room with better facilities and well thought design
b. designing a very good air ventilation system for the room
c. proper hanging place (wardrobe like) for hanging of provided telekung
d. lockers for safekeeping of personal belongings of those who come to perform prayers
e. reduce the use of carpets, would be best if opt for wooden flooring
f. appropriate space for shoes
g. design the wudhuk place properly, to avoid the floor being flooded with water and avoid unneeded accidents
8. whatever it is, its the designing part that would help change a lot to how the surau works.
9. they (i believe the faculty) should pay more attention to this.
10. correct me if im wrong, shouldn't our praying room be as important as any meeting rooms that are fully air-conditioned and well lit with high quality carpeting and furnishings? hm.
11. i'm just a student, sitting here in the corridor, waiting for my next class, and going to the surau a lil later.
